conch festival at turks and caicos resortIf you’re looking for things to do on Providenciales, look no farther than a Turks and Caicos resort! This year, Providenciales once again plays host to the annual Turks and Caicos Conch Festival on American Thanksgiving weekend (November 25-26, 2011).

Now in its 8th year, the Conch Festival features a weekend full of fun activities including a conch tasting competition where 25 local restaurants will compete for the most “delicious” conch. There are numerous categories the restaurants compete in, and all are aiming to claim the prize for the Best Conch Salad and Best Conch Chowder. It’s a fun event that provides plenty of excuses to explore and visit different restaurants all over Providenciales.

The conch itself holds a special place in the hearts of the residents of the Turks and Caicos – a large mollusk, besides being a chief menu item for island residents, the conch is the territory’s biggest export, and the Turks and Caicos islands also host the only “conch farm” on planet earth.

The conch farm is a favourite destination for tourists, and it’s a great way to learn about the incredible intelligence and even personality of these flat-footed relatives of the octopus. This conch farm is actually playing a role to help save the wild conch from extinction and over exploitation.

The main event will take place on Saturday afternoon (November 26) in the charming Blue Hills area of Providenciales, outside of Three Queen’s Bar & Restaurant.

Here’s a schedule of events taken from the Conch festival site:

  • Friday Night, November 25: Pre-party At Horse Eyed Jacks. – 8:00 pm
  • Saturday, November 26: Main Event – Outside of Three Queen’s Bar & Restaurant in Blue Hills
  • Sunday, November 27: Run for Charity
