things to do in st. martin1. Hike up to Fort St. Louis
Fort St. Louis, overlooking Marigot Bay, is the most significant historical destination on the island of St.Martin (in the French West Indies). The fort was originally built in 1767 to protect St. Martin from rampaging invaders including the Spanish, the English, and even privateers!

2. Meander through Marigot Market
On Wednesday and Saturday mornings an open-air market is set up along the harbour in Marigot, and it’s a great chance to buy plenty of local produce, tropical fruits and spices, and freshly caught fish.

3. Explore St. Martin Museum
This fantastic cultural destination showcases St.Martin’s rich French, African and Caribbean heritage, and includes a collection of pre-Colombian artifacts, such as  a 1,500 year old burial mound, and other treasures dating back to 1800 BC.

4. Conquer Paradise Peak
Pic Paradis towers above St. Martin. At 1,400 feet, Paradise Peak is the highest point on the whole island, providing an incredible view of the Caribbean.

5. Discover the French Quarter (Orleans)
The French Quarter, a classic Caribbean fishing village, is located on the east coast of the island just north of St.Maarten (the Dutch side), and was the first French settlement here. Some of the original seventeenth-century buildings still stand. This part of the island has not been developed much at all, so the old atmosphere of Napoleanic Europe lingers in nooks and crannies.
